my tablet pc does not have an optical drive, and this makes it difficult to transfer files easily. i want to set up a way to make file transferring easy. I'm not educated well in networking, so i need some pointers as to how to go about this.

I want to be able to have it set up so that i can just connect to another machine via crossover cable, and transfer files (thus, ftp).

In this situation, do i need an ftp "server"? or will the "client" on my tablet act as a server to another machine? basically, what do i need to install on the tablet? can i have it so that the machine connected to mine can just use the integrated client in internet explorer? will i be able to access files on the other machine just by connecting on my tablet?

EDIT: BRAINSTORM: I could set up my desktop as an ftp server, it will always be connected to the internet... Take that into consideration if you feel this is necessary for the most efficient way to plan this out

If you only want to do the tranfering when connected by crossover, you should very easily be able to "Map Network Drive.." in My Computer.

using windows networking, it won't accept my password for either computer. is there a service that i need to turn on in order to connect properly?

Why not just use a small external drive ?

The username/password has to be for the machine your attempting to access. IE: Laptop to desktop, you need to enter the desktop combo. Desktop to Laptop you need to enter the laptop combo. If the User Name is "Guest" you have to redo your share config.

Ah yes

When trying to access \\computerA\c$, you need to use a user such as computerA\Administrator and it's password.

sometimes you do need to enable the guest account as well. such as going from xp to 2000.

If you're doing it from 9x to 2k, it's a bitch. You have to make an account with the same UN/pass as the one that's on the 9x computer.

XP, at least it comes up with both user name and password field.s

im going from xp->xp. the other computer is showing up in the workgroup, but will not accept the password. im 100% positive it is the correct password. it won't work from either computer

it is either the admin password from the machine you are connecting to, or a guest account from my experience

if they are hooked up via a crossover cable, why just run windows network wizard, be so much easier to swap files back and fourth

make sure both are in the same workgroup and you turn on file transfering
also check firewalls to, than just right click a file or folder goto sharing and security and share it. After that just got My Network Places and you will see the files, can copy/paste or cut/paste ect back and fourth. XP makes it very easy :)
