ZDNet says the Federal Trade Commission has substantially limited the size of royalties that Rambus can charge for its DRAM technology. As you might expect, Rambus plans to appeal.

The commission's order sets a maximum royalty rate of 0.25 percent for SDRAM products; 0.5 percent for DDR (double data rate) SDRAM products, as well as SDRAM memory controllers or other non-memory chip components; and 1 percent for DDR SDRAM memory controllers, or other non-memory chip components.

I wonder if they mean DDR as a whole, as in DDR/DDR2,3,4 and what not.

Those weasels should be grateful for what they got. Besides, I thought they died a couple years ago. RAMBUS - They're like the roach that gets it's head cut off...I wish someone would just step on it to end it's miserable existence.

From what I read over at The Register, it does only Apply to SDRAM and DDR, not DDR2,3... whatever.

It is nice to see US-American regulatory commisions making known that they are still able and willing to punish companies for anti-competitive behavior.
