Sorry guys, noob question.

Supposing I have an 800FSB proc. can I use it on a 533 board, assuming I dont care about the speed loss?

Thanks on advance.

Also, where can I find adhesive thermal paste?

it will run at 533 insted of 800 and will be a litle slower but will work just fine

if you really wanted to...yes, but you do realize your cutting the processors performance in half.

a 3.0C on a 133mhz FSB supported board would run at a mear 2ghz :(
Also, FSB is the most important tribute to Netburst Processors... and a slower FSB should be avoided.

Thanks for the response guys.

Reason is that I have the chance to get a 2.8GHz 800MHz for free, but my mobo doesn't support it (up to 533MHz only).

Dont want to take it unless I can use it for the time being. :D Unless you guys want to trade me...

there are plenty of board you can get for dirty cheap that can run that chip.

Actually it probably won't work. The BIOS won't have support the CPU microcode and if it's a Prescott voltages will be way off and you could be looking at frying something.

Don't know if a Northwood would post at 533MHz FSB or not. But a Prescott won't work at all.

You're right on the Prescott point(s) but I've never tried installing a 800fsb P4 in a 533MHz board......as CPU's are always quite as backwards compatible as different speeds of DDR memory for example.

Considering how low prices are on numerous 800MHz s478 mobo's I don't think it'd really be the best thing to try and throw the chip (which is?) is the older board. As it was said before, you'll be cutting back your performance quite a bit. For example, trying to install a 2.8C 800MHz fsb chip in a 533mhz board woudl result in the CPU being clocked down to 133MHz, which woud leave the 2.8C at 1.8GHz......not worth trying to get it to work IMO.

Yeah, you can get a decent socket 478 board or even a very good board for around $100. It's too cheap not to do the right way.

wpd7, if you honestly don't care about the 1GHz speed loss (for whatever reason) it might still be worth a shot....but just be prepared to buy a board one way or another, because I have a feeling that depending on what board you've got, the 800fsb chip might not "go" for ya.

I mean, if the comp is used for NOTHING but internet surfing and doing homework then w/e......cus i honestly couldnt tell the difference on my old P4 when i clocked it from 2.6 down to 1.5 or so.....but if you're planning on doing ANY gaming I'd really recommend picking up a newer board.....cus that ~1GHz loss is gonna hurt you......BAD.

I guess its a new board then. I just really didn't want to upgrade to a new shuttle SFF. :D
