i posted this in the overclcoking section but since so mnay of you here overclock too i thought id post here aswell.im running a d930 on the ds3 right now with 2 sticks of 1gb corsair ddr2 800.

"ive been trying to understand this subject as im trying to overclock my pentium d 930,however
i dont quite get it.at stock speeds my ratio is automatically 1:2 does this mean the ram is running twice as fast as cpu or half as fast?
1:1 is the goal but i tryed running my ram at half speed and cpuz wont show me the ratio on my gigabyte ga-965p-ds3 board at this setting.

can you help me out?all the guides i found on google were for older cpus and lower speed rams and i think things have changed since then,im i wrong? thanks.

btw i have 2 1gb dimms of ddr2 800 corsair ram (5-5-5-12 according to corsair but pcuz says spd is 5-5-5-18 which im also unsure about)thanks."
 
are you using cpuz?
under memory if it shows
FSB : DRAM 1:2 it means your mem is running half not double


i would try running it at 4:5 ratio first though. the closer to 1:1 the better.
 
ok the 1:2 is with the ram at 800 mhz.the fastest it can go?(its pc6400 ram ratio on auto which is like 4.00 in manual setting)
this is with cpu at stock 3ghz 200 fsb since im trying to understand how the ratio works.

well, with the ds3, the settingi n the bios for 1:1 ratio was 2.
for 2.5 the ratio is 4:5
set it to 2 first so you can have 1:1 ratio and oc from there.
i hit a wall at 330fsb with 1:1 ratio.
so i changed it to 2.5 in the bios (which is 4:5) ratio and my fsb was able
to go to 365.

btw when i tried diffrent ram multis at stock speed cpu my win xp crashed when i tryed to see what cpuz says 2.50 is.

well, im using f4c bios, not sure if that matters but the defualt on mine was 3 in the bios setting. when i open up cpuz it stated that the divider was at 2:3.

so i first dropped the bios setting value to 2. this makes cpuz show up that ram divider is 1:1

before i tried the value of 2 in the bios i tried 4+ and my computer wouldnt even boot.
i would say to start with the value of 2 in the bios, and then 2.5 if you hit a wall for getting higher fsb.
 
how can 1:1 ratio be the what you get when you run ram at lowest speed in this bios?i thought it was what you should go for an is hard to achieve because the ram wouldnt run fast enough when you overclock.

also setting to 2.5 instead of 2 would make the ram go faster so wouldnt that mean you need to lower fsb?

just try those settings in the bios and check cpuz and see what your ratio it is. thats how it worked for mine.

problem is it wont tell me ratio when i set ram to 2.00 i even tryed a conservetive oc to 3.6ghz to see if it will tell me ratio then.ram is at tighter timings but still no ratio displayed.
 
someone tell me if i got this right.
amd processors up untill recently would work best a 1:1 even if ram could run faster,intel is able to work better at some cases in a non syncronus ratio because the memory controler can utilize the higher the extra bandwidth the ram gives when its running faster than the fsb.
nowadays lowest ratio on intel is 1:1 and everything else has ram running faster than cpu fsb.

becuase of dual channel ram controllers the highest ratio is 1:2 which means ram is effectively twice as fast as fsb.

so to overclock just find fastest fsb and get ram to work as fast as it can.(to keep it easy say at the rams factory rating or slightly higher with same timings)

did i get it right?

at stock the 930 is 200hz fsb but ur ram can run at 800 without being overclocked, so you can set it to 1:4 multiplier and u'll be cool
