FSB DRAM Ratio

I am currently running an 680i chipset evga mobo that runs the most recent Phoenix bios. I am trying to overclock past 3.2 GHz on my E6750. Currently I am limited by running the FSB linked to my DRAM.

The largest ratio offered in my bios is 3:2, and with my XMS2 DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) limited at spec at 1066 MHz I can't overclock past 1600 MHz x 2 (3.2 GHz).

My question is whether it is detrimental to run the two unlinked and freely raise the processor clock speed, or should I run linked and run the RAM faster than the spec'd 1066MHz?

Linked vs. unlinked has pretty much no effect on performance. Just use whichever configuration that lets you hit higher CPU clocks.

just to tack a question on here, can the timings from a low frequency mch latch for ram be mostly converted over to a higher frequency one? the 200 MHz strap only lets me use a ratio of above 1:1, and when I push my cpu to the limits the fsb is much for anything above 1:1. Thus I have the option of using the 3rd latch 333MHz (the 2nd lowest also doesn't allow 1:1) and the lowest timings or cutting back on the fsb and using the 200 MHz latch and the lowest timings with a lower cpu clock.

is everyone's motherboard like this? how important are the latches?
