I have a Sony Vaio RS320. According to Sisoft Sandra 2005, my front-side bus is running at 4x200MHz so an equivalent 800MHz. The memory is running at 2x166MHz so 333MHz. Sandra is stating that the speeds are different and that I should use faster RAM.
Currently I have 1GB of PC2700 RAM.

My question is can I use PC3200 RAM running at 400MHz? I'm kind of confused by the whole 4x200MHz thing.

Thanks!

Yes you want pc3200 (ddr400, 200mhz) ram, ram cant run faster than the fsb.

As for what sandra is telling you, your cpu is quad pumped. Your ram is double pumped. but the numbers you should be interested in are 200mhz fsb and 166mhz ram frequency. Having your ram equal to fsb will perform better, but I doubt you will notice anything.

for clarification:

quad-pumped = 4 bits per clock
double pumped (ddr) = 2 bits per clock.

Cool thanks for the reply. I'm trying to ramp up the system I have so I can run Everquest 2 at higher visual settings. The BFG 6800 Ultra from Tiger Direct is on the way along with a 600W power supply. If I can match the bus speeds it might only be noticeable in load times, but we'll see. I'm pretty much stuck with the 2.6 GHz processor, but most of the juice will be flowing through the video card.

Thanks again!

Edit: Grammar and small addition of proc speed

I think you like the new setup, expecially the new video card. Im currently running about the same rig with a asus av8 mobo. Im a little confused on my mobos setting for over clocking the ram. I got the front side bus up pretty high 235/11 but i cant seem to get my ram up that high, the next setting im seeing is 2:1 or 266 and i cant quite tweak that high and cant burn in cuase its the next option. i think i can mess with the clock cycles but i dont knwo that much about it so i dont want to. i wish this mobo's manual had a little better description under the ai oc settings
