Read the thread! Typical background radiation is up to 100 cpm, these are only 200 cpm. Hardly dangerous.
 
is that 200cpm for each marble? correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the radioactivity increase if you have more and more marbles?
 
I just wouldn't keep a few of these in my pockets...or you'll end up with more Radioactive marbles than what you started with. :D

Ok, I just did a little more research. U235 almost exclusively produces beta radiation, which is considered to be the least harmful.

Alpha particles have the lowest penetrating energy (they are easily stopped by your skin, or a piece of paper), but they have mass (and a +2 charge) - they can be inhaled and are very toxic. A typical alpha particle (a couple MeV) will travel 1 inch in the air before losing all its kinetic energy.

Gamma radation is mass-less, but relatively high energy. It can destroy tissue. U235 produces negligible gamma waves.

Beta particles have a charge of -1, and are slightly more penetrating than alpha particles. Ironically, glass is very effective at stopping beta particles. So the glass in the marble does a great job absorbing its own beta particles. Since beta particles interact less with matter than alpha particles, they will travel about 600 times farther than an alpha particle with the same energy. (about 600 inches through air for a 2-3 MeV particle). This is actually a good thing - it means that the radiation is spread over a larger area with beta particles than with alpha particles. (the secret to pollution is dilution... ;)) Anyway, because of this effect, you will get similar counts with one marble as you will with 10 marbles. (also, because a geiger counter measures a relatively small area)

And, it's not 200 cpm per marble. It's 100 cpm when you point a geiger counter at just about anything, and around 200 cpm when you point it at 'some' marbles (1m away).
 
beta particles are electrons. alpha particles are 2 protons and 2 neutrons. if you ask me which does more damage, i would say flying electrons would.

is that jar the one you origionally obtained them in? i ask becuase thats a radition type 3 precaution label.
my father, no cracks here guys, works as a nuclear medicine diagnostic technision, and through the past 10 years ive aquired enough knowladge to know that they keep all type 3 in a locked room armed with a security system in place. (no ive never tried to get the isotope generator out "whistles")

also, 100 is shit all, which is why im curious on the sticky lol
 
You could plug a T line with these... I imagine that would be a pretty cool effect in a w/c system. Just a thought for anyone who mgiht be interested.

UV Dye + Radioactive marble + black light cold cathode = glowy!

They are glass, they won't wear out and the glow won't go away, but keep in mind the only glow under a blacklight.

I don't know about the airplane bit...but I wouldn't try it!

These marbles are pretty neat. When I want to impress someone though, I just take them to the reactor and show them the "blue glow".

I used to have a jar of these when I was younger. Let me see if I can scrape together some spare cash to buy some from you.
