whats highest multi on this?

52x max multi. No voltage over 1.535v ever used. I doubt more would make a difference though.

Is it important to use a specific or recommended motherboard to get to 5GHz?

No chip did same on Gigabyte P67A UD7-B3, Maximus IV Extreme B2 & Maximus IV Extreme-Z. The Asus boards all took the same voltage and LLC settings and the Gigabyte took less vcore set in bios and higher LLC due to massive vdroop
