Frustrating... ringtones

Trying to make my own ringtone, but apparently thats communist of me to try because i HAVE to buy a song off of itunes it tells me.

Ive googled and searched to no avail.

using fully upgraded itunes/iphone as of this writing.

Do i HAVE to jailbreak it for this crap? Tell me im missing some step...
 
Load the song you want to make a ringtone of in an audio editor like Audacity.

Trim the portion you want, 30 seconds in length.

Convert the new file to an .m4a file.

Rename the file to filename.m4r, copy it to iTunes.

And that should work with any sound file I want right?
 
Alright, followed the above perfectly, still get the same msg:

"A ringtone cannot be created from the song "blahblah.m4r
You can create iPhone ringtones only from songs purchased from the iTunes Store."
 
I make ringtones all the time on my iphone, using itunes. Make sure you atre not using DRM'd songs to make ringtones from
 
Has anyone confirmed that this still works in iTunes 9? Perhaps the recent update disabled this function (just guessing here).
