Front usb 3.0 conundrum

long time member of the [M], first time poster here :cool:

i have an antec three hundred (original, not v2) case with 2 front usb 2.0 and my mb is an msi k9a2.

what is the cheapest option to either get the current front usb working 3.0, or adding something else that will work with my mb say in the pci-e port?

im not looking to drop a lot into it so the $75 one from newegg is out :D

Yeah I've looked at those. Guess a pci-e 3.5 with a 5.25 enclosure is my only option.

Just a quick question. Have you tried emailing Antec about an upgrade kit for your case?

Reason being is that I have the same problem with my Silverstone FT02-BW. I have one of the first models with USB 2.0 but want to upgrade them to USB 3.0. I contacted Silverstone and they quoted me $25 including shipping to get them sent out to me. It will match the case and not take up any extra drive bays\pci-e slots.

Just a thought if you haven't tried that route already, may save you a few bucks while keeping the stock look of your case.

I have not. Didn't even know that was possible! Ill hit em up tomorrow. Would something like an upgrade work with my old board?
 
I have (2) evga USB 3.0 PIC-e cards I picked up last year for like $10 each or less. They work perfect.
 
It seems like there are a few versions of your board. As I have not owned an AMD system since the Opteron days, I'm quite unfamiliar with them. What model is yours exactly?

It doesn't look like the Platinum version supports it, but I didn't look through the others as I figured I would ask what model you had first. The front panel ports would require the proper USB3.0 header on your motherboard.

All I see is that it is a platinum, n1996, and ms-7376 ver 1.0
 
Ah, sorry then. It doesn't appear that that board has the necessary USB3.0 header on the motherboard to drive the ports.

Looks like the PCI-e route is the only option for now.

Thanks for the research coff. Any opinions on any pci-e that isn't outrageously priced?
 
I really haven't done too much research into them. By the time I had any use for it I had upgraded to a motherboard that had it. Sorry.
