Front-end connector problem

First of all, I know I shouldn't have "trial and error" 'd this problem, but I did because I was so frustrated. It seems like every computer I put together always has problems with the case/chassis front-end connectors not connecting properly to the 12 (I think) pin array on the mobo for the front end LED's and power switch, etc. Is there any reason I seem to be having this problem and nobody else really seems to have it?

For example, a computer I was building for a friend out of gathered/misc parts was like this:

I found two pins that were definitely the power switch - no problems at all hooking that up and using it. The LED's are where the problem lies. I found two pins in the array where, 1) if you place the power LED to it, nothing happens, BUT 2) If you place the HDD LED there, it stays a solid light. Therefore, I assumed this to be the power LED pins but I figured maybe it just didn't have enough energy to fully power the power LED on the case. All 3 connectors are 2 pins each, so there was a multitude of places that I could put them, but these two pins (besides the power switch pins) are the only ones that showed any activity on them. I'm sure the way I'm writing this is confusing to some people, but it's the best example I can really give you.

Oh, I almost forgot. There's also an "Alternate power LED connector" on the motherboard, but it's 2 pins, with a space between them (so you would need a 3 pin connector, for example)... but I don't have a 3 pin connector to really see if that would've worked.

Anyways, any help would be appreciated, as I'm just getting pretty frustrated over this. I mean, isn't there a standard or something for these front end connectors? Or at least a converter kit, or something like that?

The motherboard is an Intel D845HV Desktop Board. Just in case anybody needs to know.
 
Keep in mind that LED's have a positive and a negative side to them. If you plug it in backwards, at best they'll simply not light up. At worst you'll burn them out (with enough reverse bias they produce one of the most awful smells in the world)

Thanks a bunch... that's exactly what I was looking for. I have no idea why I couldn't find it. I even downloaded the .pdf version of the manual for the board, but it didn't go into detail about which pins do what. Thanks guys...
