Front Bay CD player

Im looking to start a small mod that basically uses a standard cd-rom and a front bay speaker device... i realize this is fairly easy to do but what i want to try is to by-pass hooking up the IDE cable to my mother board... and the question came up how would i change songs, i thought perhaps a cd player with a skip button...

heres what i came up with :

would this work or am i going to need to find some type of front bay audio controller device if they even make them. i really only want this mod if i can bypass hooking it up to my mobo... any help would be nice

I tested this out,
I used an old 24x CD-ROM with a play/pause button along with an eject button...

I dissconnected the IDE cable from both the cd-rom and the mother board, but left power. There was no connection between the motherboard and cd-rom so i was happy about that, it was then time to test it. I turned on my machine went into bios and just let it idle. Put a misc. audio cd in, and plugged headphones into the jack on the cd-rom. Pressed the play button and it worked great. Only problem was I could not go to next track.

I think has an analog port in the back, so im looking to hook the cd-rom directly in the back to the speakers in the back.

If skipping tracks is going to be complacated for someone like myself, im not going to worry about it.

Any ideas?

too bad you couldn't just replace the CD player with a hard drive. make your own ghetto ipod XD

EDIT: oooh..this is going to be insdie your computer... ha ha... i thought for some reason this was going to be something you'd carry around with you like a walkman or something. ha ha..

its rather expensive and i really dont need the dvd-rom features along with the fm/am radio.

and theres really not a reason for me not hooking it up to my motherboard and running an regular audio player in windows, i just really dont want to.
 
I know that a few of the guys over in the computer audio section are pretty into using computer optical drives as players for stand alone CD players. If you're serious about getting this to work the way you want, I'd post over there what you're trying to do and ask them for suggestions. If there is a simple way to control tracksw, they'll know what it is.

has a front display and controls to go back/forward play/pause/stop etc... the display is backlit too which is nice, and the drives are CHEAP... analog output is acceptable, but they really shine as a transport hooked to an external DAC

only negative is you have to use a caddy (remember those? lol)

ahhaa. a caddy. I wouldn't buy one until that came out with one that had a tray. I flat out refused.
