NVIDIA Cuts Prices on High End Cards

Hexus is reporting that NVIDIA, facing pricing pressure on the heels of the impressive release of AMD/ATI's 4800-series, is cutting prices on the 9800 GTX, GTX 260, and GTX 280 cards. The AIB (board partner) prices will be as follows (all prices are USD):

9800 GTX: $165 ($199)

GTX 260: $222 ($329)

GTX 280: $392 ($499)

(Prices in parentheses are target selling prices.)

An interesting issue arising from this move is the extent to which NVIDIA is protecting its AIBs and the broader channel from these price cuts. Even if it just protects the AIBs it could be looking at an additional bill of $10 million or so and, obviously, if it extends that to the entire channel the figure will be considerably higher.

I think it's time to get a new card when the price drops hit the egg. I knew it would be good to wait just a bit. :cool:


 
No kidding Kendrak, now I'm kicking myself for not waiting a few weeks to get the GTX280, which I'm still not able to use!!!

I wonder how well the ATI cards will do once the core's get updated for the 4800 series. Then we can really make an informed decision. Till then, we really are just guessing.
 
Don't feel too bad, I just got a 8800GT 512 for $142 for the wifes rig and now.... ohh well.

(I should get it tomorrow) Still worth 4500+ points after I OC the hell out of it. I'm getting 4500 points out of my 8800 GTS 320 that's 2 years old, it's screaming in pain, but :p

The 260 is almost tempting now. By the time I'm actually ready to buy the 4870x2 might be out and the new ATi card might be getting decent ppd by then. Who knows. This competition is a nice change and hopefully continues for a while.

 
My plan was always a couple older nVIdia cards (probably 9800GTX) for Folding and a 4870X2 for gaming. If it can run Folding@home fast, great, but obviously gaming performance takes precedence there. I'll probably just produce on my quad core in that machine unless the ATi client gets a lot better.
 
Now I'm glad I'm broke... Forced me to resist the 9800GTX for 196 on the egg... Once the prices slip down I'll pick up one. Any word on if the GX2 prices are coming down?

 
At least I got 2 months ouf of my 9800gtx when it was a decent deal at $265. Makes it real tempting to get 2 more though.

Is it sad that I am thinking of doing that exact same thing? Pop in a 260 in my current rig, and throw that 8800GTS 320 into the FS to keep it folding. Darn cheap prices making me want to spend money. :p
 
You guys must have newer file servers than I do. Mine is a P4-1.7 in an old Dell Optiplex gx400. Put Win Home Server on it, but it has the old AGP in it, so no folding action for it.:mad:
 
I'm pretty sure ati has a 3850 agp version ;).
 
I'm perfectly happy with my 8800GT's at over 5k each for right at $100-110... Wait for the 280GTX to drop down to about 250 and then it might make sense to use them.
