Hi, i used to have a E4300 overclocked at 3ghz running fine. Ive just sold it to my friend, and now need a new cpu. What should i take now? is there something out there as overclockable as this one?

i though maybe the E6750 should be good? I see it can overclock to 3.8ghz.
maybe i should wait for Penryn processor? i can hold a few weeks with my laptop... When will they hit the market?
 
Yes wait. Buying one now this close to the launch of the new CPU's would be a waste of $$, unless you can find one for cheap used to hold you over.
 
Does your MB support the 45nm processors? Something to check on/think about.

They should. As to whether it is worth the wait, that's up to you. Check the roadmaps and see what chips are coming out when and at what price points and then make a decision based on that. You can pick up an E6750 for $189 and overclock that to 3.6 or so - that should be reasonably competitive with a Penryn if you don't feel like it is worth the wait (Penryns look to be about 5-10% better clock for clock). It all comes down to how bad you are hurting right now. If you can wait, it is better to wait at this point.
 
got my E8400 working out today(oc to 3.8ghz), and over my previous E4300 (oc 3.0ghz) i see a little difference in Super PI: went from 1m47 to 1m41 :/

That seems a bit small of a change. You have the latest bios, correct?
 
I want to know this also, because if you see little difference then Im not getting on.

I have the E4300@3.0ghz also. Please run more comparison test this could help a lot of other people wondering if they should jump on the bandwagon or just keep what they have.
 
If you have an 800 MHz advantage(25%), with more cache(200%) and supposedly better IPC(5-10%), there's something horribly wrong if you're only getting 6% decrease in times on superpi.
 
yes i have latest bios, and i ran test on SuperPI at 4m.

for the tests, i suppose i could do some more, lemme know witch applications you want me to run, and i'll try to go at my friend run it on his E4300 (same pc as me , except cpu)
 
Lets see.... I usually run 3dmark06 and compare the cpu score when I overclock. Im not sure any you have on your computer.
 
Well, i'd try to avoid something that mesures the graphic card too, as i got an 8800GTS 640mb, and he got a 320mb, but i guess i could run PCmark on both pc.
 
wPrime results:

Allendale E4300:
32M, 47.77 sec @ 1.8ghz(stock)
32M, 28.484 sec @ 3.0ghz

Wolfdale E8400:
32M, 23.374sec @ 3.8ghz

results really aren't so nice :(
 
What did you expect? Those scores scale linearly - the decrease in times you had from 1.8 to 3.0 are the same as the decrease from 3.0 to 3.8 (exactly) - which just goes to show that 32M Prime calculations are computation-dependent, and not cache dependent (which is the only real difference between those two chips, besides clock speed and SSE4).

yes, i did expect way better.
 
lose the nvidia chipset. Get a p35 based board. I had a 4300 allendale on an N650SLI-DS4 and the chipest made a big difference to. Plus i can overclock the ram way further with my new P35C-DS3R.
 
Agashka, I've got a brand new E8400 build that I'm putting together this weekend - I'll hit 3.8ghz on it and run the same benchmarks for comparison - I'll be on a P35 board, so we'll see if theres a difference to be had (other hardware not-withstanding)
