A friend of mine who occasionally visits the forums is having some weird problems that have been intensifying over the past few days.

He has a shuttle w/ a P4 2.8 and a 9800 Pro. Stock everything.

The past few days he's noticed that after leaving his computer on at night, he'd wake up and see it off. He thought his sister or parents woud shut it off by pressing the sruge protector on/off switch, but he's not sure.

Next, his computer would freeze here and there and also have weird problems like the cursor not showing up.

Today he was on his computer and its froze and he restarted and was given the usual boot menu to choose what OS to start from (always gets that) but when he chose XP or whatever, nothing showed up and the screen would be completely black. No HDD activity or anything.

He called me up and told me the story and so I figured it was an overheating problem and that some how some temp or fan settings must have been screwed with in BIOS. I tell him to load fail-safe defaults. He does, saves, restarts, and nothing shows up on the screen at all. He didn't tell me if it posted or not. He felt the top of his shuttle and said it was really hot.

I told him to let it cool off and I'd post it on the [H].

Any help, ideas, or anything would be greatly appreciated by him.

Find out if the comp POSTs. If the case itself is really hot to the touch, I think it's safe to assume that it's producing way too much heat. Have him crack the case open and make sure all of the fans are working. Also, ask him to make sure there are no visible signs of damage (ie. bulging capacitors, burnt traces, lifted pads, etc, etc). The more info we have, the better.

And sorry to hear about it. It's always a grim day when the computer won't turn on.
