friends computer wont turn on

he was playing games all day and fell asleep with the computer on ( about 7hrs total ). he gets up goes to his computer smells something burning, his computer shuts off. it wont turn back on now, im pretty sure its his powersupply but i dont know for sure(it was a cheapie 400w). his case doesnt have very good cooling. hes using a 2600+, 5900 nu, 512mb. if its his powersupply, whats the cheapest one he should get?
 
Sounds like a crap powersupply. Guess what, do not replace a bad one with another bad one.

He should go to Newegg.com and look at a 400w Fortron Powersupply. Those are pretty good.


Note: I am NOT a powersupply expert.
 
Warmonkey is right! dont go for a cheapie PSU...ever...not to mention if you invest in a good one (Antec Truepower, Termaltake, etc) then you can use it in any other computer you set up.

400W and up...sometimes with the cheapie PSU's the fuses dont blow fast enough, and it fries a few caps in there.

i was doing a job for a friend of mine(her grandfather), lightning storm, and his computer wont turn on. i open it, check connections...nothing

crack open the PSU...see the fuse is blown, then after a while i realize that there i could follow a path of blown caps, and burnt out board (blackened)...i mourned. NO PSU deserves that kind of treatment. NONE
