Ok, so my friends computer just blew as he was watching TV, he said it made a loud bang and loads of smoke came from it, the PC was switched OFF at the time, which is something i've never heard of before. The PC wont now start.

He's asked me to ask could a if a power supply blowing takes any other components with it. He doesnt yet know what caused it and what has blown

Definately the powersupply. If the power supply goes there is also a good chance it could take things like the motherboard as well.

Yes, power supplies tend to take a few hostages and kill them along the way out. Check every component indavidually is the only way to find out.

when the psu blew it likely sent a surge though the wires connected to the mobo, weather or not is caused damage only you can find out.

He got himself a new psu today, and was lucky enough for everything else to be fine.

And the moral of the story is: "It is much better to spend more money on a QUALITY PSU than it is to rebuy parts that were taken out by a cheap PSU." -Confucius

I've seen PSU go, and not take anything with them, BUT I've seen them blow and take almost EVERYTHING.... had one come to me, and it blew the

modem
nic
soundcard
HDD
cd-rom
motherboard

Only survivors were the vid card and floppy.

If it was a 7800GTX...then it was a good save :)

LOL, this was about 2 years ago, and it was an S3 trio... not a good save at all... :D

It depends on which side the PSU goes on, on whether it takes anything with it.
