Like the title says. my friend wants me to help him build a $500 pc for gaming.
I know I am going to have to go with AMD. Also I am going to need a pretty decent video card. So far I have this.

CPU - AMD Athlon XP 2500+ "Barton", 333 FSB, 512K Cache Processor - $85
MB - ASUS A7N8X Non Dlx - 87.99
Video Card - Gigabyte RADEON 9600XT - $159( Anyone have any other opinions on a vid card)
HDD - Western Digital Special Edition 80GB 7200RPM - $75
RAM - Mushkin 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200 Basic Green - Retail - $44x2 ( Any one have experience with this? Can I get better for the price?)
CDRW – Lite-On Beige 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive - $36
Generic floppy - $10
Generic modem - $10
CASE/PSU - something up to $100

Basically I want some opinions on the hardware for this system. If you feel something is better then what I have let me know so I can change it.

P.S. He does not want a DVD player so I did not include it in the build.
 
You should be able to get a decent case and psu for 50 bucks, does he need a monitor and windows?
 
Get the abit NF7-S at newegg, it'll have firewire/sata+adapter/soundstorm/ for only $4 vs the A7N8X non deluxe. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?DEPA=1&sumit=Go&description=13-127-166&searchdepa=1

For a case/psu its hard to beat one of the antec combos http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...g=7&manufactory=1516&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1

Another cheap/quality option would be to get any old cheap case and a Fortron/sparkle "FSP series" psu or this nice Enlight 420w (pretty sure its the same psu as 420w Thermaltake)
 
I echo the NF7-S comment. More features for a marginally higher price. The DFI Infinity II (?) is nice too.
 
id say cange the case to something alittle cheaper and then use the saved money to go to another stick of ram cause the 512 will help alot more.
 
OK so I'm going to change the MB to the NF7-S.
Also what do you guys think about the video card? Can I get something better for the price?

Tuyhon I am getting 2 sticks of the Mushkin 256MB DDR PC-3200 so he can run it in dual channel.
