Friend cannot access second HD

My friend is having troubles detecting his second HD. It shows up on startup but gives him the bird in windows. Tried such things as going to My Computer/Manage and trying to scan for new devices to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. :)
 
What operating system?
If 2K/XP, does it show up under disk management inside adminstrative tools/computer management?

No...that's the whole problem. Windows does not detect it at all. :( It is detected on bootup though, as I said.
 
If it is IDE, check the jumper settings. If it sata, don't worry about it. After that, try running the diagnostic test from your manufacturer. (i.e. DLG diag from WD, maxblast for maxtor, DFT for hitachi/IBM). If those do not detect the drive, try plugging it into another comp and see if it recognizes it. If they do you may have a bad cable or a bad ide/sata channel/controller.
 
It might be that it's not formated as was the case initially with my drive not showing up @ all in windows, but in the bios.

Regardless it would show up in disk management
 
SATA or IDE? If SATA, check the data cables, as they have a tendency to come loose (bios will show them, but not Windows, I've had a similar problem before).

Precisely. I ran sysprep on the disk before removing it from his dell, a process I've done quite a few times. We put it in his new machine and it would not boot....put it back in the Dell and same problems (couldn't find NTLDR). What I decided to do was use his other HD with easily retrievable stuff to install windows on. That HD is now working without problems, thought I did find out the jumpers on the drives were set all wrong a few days ago when I did this for him. Now that his new boot driver is working properly his old drive is not readable. Still won't boot in the Dell either. Only thing I could figure is that he was using a screwdriver that was somewhat magnetized. While building the system I told him to stop using it. I told him to run the WD Diag (it's a WD drive) yesterday, lets see if that works.

PS-It's IDE, hence el jumpers. :)
 
I work on computers for a living, and magnetic screwdrivers really haven't ever given me a problem (aside from being lost when i need one). I can't say I've had one drive failure out of hundreds of hard drive replacements because of screw drivers. I'm more inclinded to think the hard drive may have been bad out of the box if the jumper settings and cables were ok.
 
It's my hard drive that's messed up. I just connected the hard drive again with the correct jumper settings, and I was planning on running WDdiag, but now on boot up it doesn't detect EITHER hard drives. So I disconnected the WD hard drive, and it boots up fine with no problems, everything working.
 
kind of off topic, but i have some western digital drives that REFUSE to be detected on some MSI boards.....neither in bios or windows, and i kno my jumper settings, and good/bad cables etc...just weird either way...

MSI KT3Ultra 2 same deal here, WD drive will not detect on master on either channel, but they will detect as slave. and i know on WD drives, you take off the jumper for single drive...weird, but figured id add that in
 
Yeah you don't need a jumper setting if the drive is Master, but you do if it's slave. It is an MSI board though. And apparently it isn't being detected in BIOS anymore, but it was yesterday. My cable is working fine, I know that. But when it was being detected by the BIOS it took about 15 minutes to start up, and most of the time it wouldn't. 1/10 times it started.

I had suggested to Rhetoric (when he shouted at me across the house to come in his room) that you try booting with your current bootable drive as the Primary Master and the wacko drive as the Secondary Master. Did you try this? Just for shits and giggles. :)
 
I had a problem recently where my computer wouldn't detect ANY drives in Windows randomly. Sometimes my CD-ROM would be detected, but other times it would just dissappear.

I eventually narrowed it down to being my power supply. It just wasn't strong enough.
 
did you check you ide cable??

also.. i was messing with a comupter i got from the trash last weekend.. i have an 8gb Maxtor.. and when i put it in.. neither the 2.5 quantum or the 8gb maxtor would show up.. but each works individually.. both with jumpers set correctly.. they don't play together for some reason..

and on my dad's comptuer.. his WD only works as an only drive with no jumper, and on the farthest ide connector.. unlike the time i realized that both my maxtor and samsung drives were master, and had worked fine that way for at least a month... i guess the one farthest on the cable was master.. wierd shit happens...
 
That's how my WD used to work. Master, no jumpers. But since I'm on my second hard drive now, I'm not reformatting both drives again to get another HD.
