Fried PSU Symptoms

Hi all,

Just an hour ago, i was recently enjoying a game of WoW, when my younger brother comes darting into my room telling me that his PC has just shut itself off, and that there was a funny smell coming from inside.

I went to check up, and the smell was awful, and was definitely coming from the PSU. I removed the PSU, and replaced it with a fully functional Hiper 520W i had spare. Problem now is however, the PC will boot, but shuts down after a short time. When i try entering the BIOS, i can browse around for all of 3 seconds before it locks up and then shuts down shortly after. CPU seems fine, fan is spinning ok, and all other things seem to check out.

I've never had a PSU fry on me before, so i'm unaware of the many symptoms of this type of failure, and the best steps to go about troubleshooting the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

what PSU was that? if it was a generic it might be that it damaged the mobo or something... try reseating the CPU heatsink...

I took off the heatsink to check that it wasn't the CPU making the funny smell too. I dusted the heatsink out, then re-seated it before powering up with the new PSU. I think motherboard damage is likely :(

Assuming that your parts are compatible, start trying out his components in your computer, and vice versa. There are low chances that you're going to hurt anything when doing this, though there always is the possibility. It will let you ascertain what of his is fried, and what isn't.

It sounds like he came in your room saying "its making a funny smell"; and you didnt turn it off before you traced it to the PSU. Had to do some damage.. Hell, just be a good brother and build him a new one. :D
