Fried my card?

I've been playing a bunch of games this summer and noticed my 8800gt was getting pretty hot (around 90c). I decided to order an Accelero S1, which I installed today. The installation went fine except my video card wouldn't work. 10 minutes later my video card started working and everything was fine. Temps were 20c lower than normal. I was extremely happy.

However, when I began to play SC2 and the temps went to 70c, my monitor would go black. This was strange to me b/c my card would normally get to 100c with the stock cooler and would play fine. I thought my card was overheating so I attached 2 80mm fans to the Accelero. I decided to use Furmark to stress test my card...bad idea. I got a black screen at 60c and now my card is artifacting. (I don't think this makes a difference but I had Rivatuner scheduled to increase my fan speed when the temps reached 60c even though I took off the stock cooler fan)

Did I fry my card? and what should I do now? Thanks

Just tried the baking method @200 for 10min...didn't work. Still don't understand how the accelero messed up my card.

After baking it, I just put a dot of paste on the GPU and squished it with the accelero. My card was still having artifacts. The entire screen is completely covered so that I can't see/read anything.

Sounds like it its time to pull the wallet out, unfortunately.

What kind of thermal paste are you using?

Are you 100% sure you didn’t get any of the old or new TIM on something other than the core?

It’s also possible you knocked a component off the board while changing the heat sink. Now before you get excited let me explain. I have seen video cards where all the little resistors aren’t properly seated and just touching one can cause it to break free. Only seen it twice over the years but that’s was enough to know it can happen and make me look over every inch of my new cards that I can see. I have been lucky in that I noticed the issue and was able to repair it. But with such small components it’s possible you lost a resistor or something and didn’t even notice it.

The other thing that could have happened is you may have static shocked the ram on your video card.

Or maybe since you changed the heat sink the ram is now overheating. And to me this seems very likely since you have problems before you GPU core even heats up all the way.

Before my card broke down I just used the TIM that was already applied on the Accelero. I just had to clean the old paste from the stock cooler.

I've read that the 8800gt doesn't need VRM sinks so I didn't bother putting them on (actually, I placed them on but 2 fell off and I didn't put them back on). Is it possible that the VRM overheated? or maybe the 1 VRM sink that was on conducted electricity to a nearby part.

I think you're probably right that the ram was overheating b/c something must have been overheating.

I'm gonna try to RMA the card...if I can't I have no other choice but to get a new card.
