Long time reader (since the Ati 9500 pro review) never actually had to ask a question that an answer hadn;t already been posted on until now.

Long story short, I tried to maked it with my old OEM Delta 700 watt on a new system upgrade. Dumb luck saved me from frying the mobo.

Now I need a new one and the Upgrade budget is blown to hell, but I can scrape $125 US

Parts needing Power

XFX Alpha Dog 8800GT at 670 Mhz
2 Hitachi 7200 RPM drives, in Raid 0 if it matters.
1 DvD / RW

1 set GeIL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
USB Mouse
Zerotherm BTF90
Lian Li PC61 with 4 stock 80mm fans, one add on 120mm Silverstone.

That pretty much covers my power draw. I will be bumping the processor up a bit.

Will the Corsair 520HX handle all this? It falls just inside budget, and will fit nicely in the PC61 and looks like it would route easily.

If not then I'll go with the 550VX. I know its a far better deal for the money, but the PC61 isn't as cable route friendly with big sheathed cables for a neat freak like myself.
 
Very easily, it could handle also second card.
(if SLI would work in that mobo)
 
You'll be perfectly fine with either supply, just make sure if you want modular or not. Also, check if there's a CompUSA near you that's still open. PSUs are 40% off and I just got an HX620 there for $100.

E.T. - Great news, 520HX it is then. Luckily the Alpha Dog 8800GT serves me very well at the moment, Witcher is the most stressful Game I play and it runs maxed, and my Cad and Rendering software flies on it.


entropism - Yes I put a modular Antec in my wife's, I like the convenience. Only one CompUSA within 100 miles, Regretably already closed. Best Buy only has low end Antecs. It's Newegg for me.


Paul_Johnson - The model number is WMEDPS-700FB-1A on that Delta PS. Gateway uses it in their FX530XV series so I'm guessing it's an OEM make. The problem was it started spiking +16.8 volts on the +12.0v under load, and the -12.0v went to a full time -16.2v. even idle. Add the smell of cooking eletronics and I'm sure it's smoked.

For the record I was doing an Everest Burn in to make sure the heatsink was properly mounted and the fans were all working properly. I was monitoring my 12v and 5 volt lines with a voltmeter purely for something to do while I waited(dumb luck part). Nothing was overclocked at this point.
 
That should have been plenty and the units OVP should have shut it down before 16.8v +12v. The -12v is really irrelevant.
 
It was stable and gave good service while installed in the Gateway box. thats why I gambled on it in the new build. I'm at a lost as to why it suddenly went bad simply by changing cases.
 
The Corsair will be in tommorow :) Think I'll open up the Delta tonight and see if I can find the reason for the burning smell. God it just hit me, I hope that smell was coming from the PSU! :eek:
 
Well after opening it up, I'm going to carefully re-assemble it and take it down to a shop I know that can test it properly outside the case.

The Hiper M-880 you folks just reviewed looks lalmost light weight compared to the components used on this thing. 450v main cap, all caps Chemi-conn, Unit only a year old, who knows.

UPS dropped my HX520 while I was typing this, so I have new priorites. I noticed the box has a Johnny Guru recommend seal on the box as well. ;)
 
Well Mr Johnson, because you questioned it, I checked it. The Delta PSU is fine.

Now I need to go wipe the egg of the old face and buy a new voltmeter! Guess where the toasty smell actually came from?

It seemed unusual that a Delta would go so wrong. Videocard?
 
My system posted, I'm burning in the heatsink now, then off to memory testing tommorow. The toasty smell was from this thin piece of plastic, won't say where it was


Multimeter would have been the correct term I guess, and yes, it's scrambled. After I has the PSU tested, I had my buddy check the stable 12v with my meter, the reading looks like a speedometer in a school zone when you see a cop the realise it's a security guard.

Edit: My buddy says he can get the meter repaired, so overall I may come out of this in pretty good shape.

At least I know whats gonna power the Linux box I'm assembling out of spare parts.
