i have one drive windows xp and windows 7 dual boot.
windows xp on c
windows 7 on d
partition e is used for storage only.

would i be successful in doing a fresh install over the c drive, leaving the d drive (windows 7) intact? i want to install a 64-bit version of windows 7 on the c drive and get rid of windows xp, as i hate it now and do not use it. i want to keep drive d intact because i have too much files to move (bookmarks, personal files, pictures,) that it would be a burden to archive any of that right now. and the price of drives is too much to get a new drive which is what i originally wanted to do.

so my question if i may repeat it: would i be successful in doing a fresh install over the c drive, leaving the d drive (windows 7 32-bit) intact?

Partiton 1 (xp) had the boot record i think because i instslled it first. What do i need to do prior to install to ensure i have dual boot? Or can i recreate the boot record after i fresh install over the first partition?

bluesmap: I will give you my 2 cents. I have done this before like this. Download EasyBCD. Make Windows 7 your default OS and save. Then reboot. You should still have dual boot with XP and Win 7. I gather you have a DVD of Win 7. So, run install, delete XP, and when done installing you will have a dual boot for Win 7 64 and Win 7.
