Hello,
I hope someone can help me out here.
My PC has been plagued with frequent BSOD's and games crashing to desktop to the point its beyond acceptable and needs to be sorted out.
The BSOD's error codes are usually one of the following:
050
07E
024
And often mention ntsokrnl.exe and/or atikmdag.sys, dxgmms1.sys.
From extensive reading they seem to point to bad RAM and have run memtest86/prime and intel burntest all to no avail yet today for example a simple AV scan resulted in a 024 BSOD.
I should mention that this is not my first build and have always been plagued with system/application crashes over the years which leads me to believe its something I am doing that is at fault.
Whether its relevenant or not, since I cannot find any clear answers on the issue, my event viewer log is constantly showing VSS errors as shown below.
Things I have tried :
- Fresh install Win 7 64
- Reset everything to stock (no overclocks anymore yet still crash)
- Increased CPU offset voltage by small amounts in case it was undervolting.
- Replaced old Raid 0 setup with new Samsung 840 pro SSD on fresh install
- Removed Creative Titanium Fatalty Pro card
- Replaced video card to 7970 lightning
- Set RAM voltage to manual instead of auto (1.50v)
- Updated all drivers to latest including MB bios
- Run memtest86 / prime/ intelburn - all passed.
- Speedstep/spread spectrum disabled, CPU line Calibration at 3
Even went as far as installing everything "differently" from how I used to - ie no driver sweeper programs incase that was the issue, different anti virus (Avast instead of Eset), different anti spyware, absolutely no *cough* cracks *cough* etc.
Temperatures are actually very good, I redesigned the room layout for the PC to minimize head and it has resulted in CPU at no more than 50C under full load in BF3 and GPU peaks at 59C.
Games will very often crash to desktop (atleast 3+ times in a evening session) - none of the games wishing to accept fault.
Is there anything else I could try before paying out money for RAM which potentially won't change anything besides my bank balance?
Unfortunately I cannot swap the RAM slots since the CPU cooler covers the nearest one.

Intel i5 2500k @Stock (depressing isn't it?)
Asrock Z68 Extreme 7 gen 3
Corsair 8 GB (2x 4) Vengeance DDR3 PC3-15000C9 1866MHz (CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9) (Run at 1333 however - is that right? - with XMS profile 9-9-9-24 1T fsb:dram 1:5 despite claiming to 1866MHz, 9-10-9-27, 1.5V - should I use the "stated speeds", or the XMS profile like I am?)

Onboard sound/Creative Titaninium fatality pro - doesn't seem to change crashes

Researched all parts before hand for compatibility which showed all to be OK apart from one thing which could be a biggie which I only learnt after buying ... Corsairs "Memory Finder" tool, showed that my motherboard was compatible with the RAM, so that is what I purchased, however, Asrocks website does NOT list it, whether a simple misprint or released after the MB was made I do not know. Which do I go buy, the Corsair or Asrock?
