I don't know which forum to use so I hope I will be redirected.
The question is about freezeups. Does anyone know how to track down what may be causing them (and much frustration)? They seem to occur mostly while on-line although I had a freezeup during the boot process once (I don't know if that is connected with the general problem). Would be most grateful for help.
 
are you ocing? Any new components? Need a little more info on your current setup. I agree with the memtest and maybe orthos to pinpoint the problem.

My system is Win2000pro. I have only added another hard disk lately and that is working ok. I don't know how to run the stress tests. I have done a complete reinstall of the OS because I hoped this would clear the problem. I don't do much to overload the system I only run radio recording programs, Skype and Messenger, play poker and general internet surfing. I don't visit dubious sites or install random programs. I have antivirus, antispyware and Zonealarm. What other info do you need? I am not sure what is important. Give some info on running the stress tests.
 
thats an old os... how old is your computer? Is the new harddrive the os boot drive? Let us know how the stress tests went. :)
 
Well thanks for the info. I ran the SP2204 test but I didn't know how long to run it. The message on screen saying 'Test 1, 4000 Lucas-Lehmer iterations of M19922945 using 1024K length' . I don't know what that all means. Do I wait for it to say 'test 2' etc? There is no count of iterations visible. I stopped it after 10mins and it said '0 errors 0 warnings'. Is that OK?
The new hard drive was bought and installed a fortnight ago. I have disconnected it and done a restart but the computer still freezes. Everything was running OK till last week. The motherboard is an Asus A7V8X - X and the whole computer was assembled under 2 years ago. The power supply is the newest component and is 450watt. I had a 350watt PS and one day it wouldn't switch on, so I binned it. The new one worked straight away then stopped also. I was doing a lot of switching on and off (while trying to find out if two hard drives had definitely failed) and I thought that PS had failed as well. I took it back to Maplins, they tested it, and it was OK. It worked straight away but failed to start again later. I disconnected all the HD(working) cables and it started up again. It has been working ever since so I have probably thrown out a working PS. The reconnected HDs work as well. Anyway I will wait and see what you have to say.
 
Let that test run overnight and see what you get, your memory may not be getting enough voltage. Idealy you shouldn't get any errors no matter how long you run it for. What videocard are you running?
 
Just a thought, I know you've probalbly done this already but....double check all your cable connections inside the computer and outside. It could be possible with all the PSU switching that a stray connection is loose. Happened with my sata harddrives a couple of times, i would just sit down at my desk and the vibration was enough for my entire computer to freeze. Perplexed the s%$@ outta me, anyway turned out the simplest fix was the answer. Let us now how it goes.
 
I will have a good look to see if anything is loose. I forgot to mention that my ISDN modem was drawing too much power and it was the cause of the PS stoppages. The modem kept disconnecting and my ISP said that some more people were experiencing the same problems and they sent me a different type and it seems to be working all right. Anyway I'll run the SP4 prog again and for longer but I never keep my computer on overnight because of the potential (if unlikely) fire risk, but I can keep it running till 3-30am. What, in the readout tells me about my memory power use? My graphics card is an INNO 3D with Tornado universal driver.
 
Well after lots of freezing I tried running the test again. Does this tell you anything? I had left the machine running and left it. I didn't get back till much later and found it hadn't run very long.

It's a little interesting that it errored now, but not last time.

I would try running it again for at least several hours, see if it happens.

If you haven't run Memtest yet, I would recommend it. It's a little bit of a hassle to run it, but it's basically the be-all-end-all of RAM testing. If it reports an error, you RMA/replace the RAM/test the RAM slots in the motherboard by running it with different RAM. If it doesn't error (recommended to run 12-24 hours for thorough testing), RAM isn't the problem (99% of the time). :)
 
Ok. I'll give memtest a run and a longer run with SP. I have had a freeze up three times just trying to make this reply. If my memory is ok at the end I am going to disconnect all my drives except for Boot and CD. I will include the floppy drive as that has been giving me trouble as well (no matter which way I connect the cable I keep getting a 'no disc' message even though there is a disk in the drive). I am also going to uninstall all the software not neccessary and see if it still does it. If by then the fault still persists I can only conclude it is a hardware fault. Anyway wait till I post again and I'll tell you what happened.
 
I haven't ran the other test yet. I get a lot of stops and have not been able to run it for 12hrs
on the SP 2004 test. What is the stated error message supposed to tell me. Does it not tell you what the hardware failure is?
 
I finally got sick of the constant freezeups. I couldn't run any tests fully so I formatted a new disk and reinstalled Windows. There was traces of an old installation on the other disk and I am hoping that it was this that was causing the problems. I will wait and see. Up to now the machine has been behaving itself and I will only install and run one program at a time to see if there is any fault with the software. The recording and radio programs will be the last. We'll see. Thanks for your help anyway.
