friend's new computer is having some serious, intermittent, freezing problems. It will freeze when idle, it will freeze in Photoshop. It'll freeze several minutes after loading windows, or sometimes it'll freeze 7+ hours later.

The specs:
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Video card: MSI NX6600GT-TD128E GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express
memory: CORSAIR TWINX1024-3200XL (2x - so 4x 512MB)
main HD: Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB 10,000RPM SATA
power supply: Antec 550W Power Supply "TRUE550 EPS12V"

It's a total freeze - no ctrl+alt+delete possible. Has to be solved with a hard reset.

I've tried reinstalling windows, flashing the BIOS, and resetting the BIOS.
This weekend I plan on swapping in RAM and the PSU from my system.

I can't think of a way to test the motherboard / proc / video card since I don't have any replacements.

running memtest now - i'll edit this with the results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Heat?
Check hard drive health also.

forgot to post that CPU heat is about 29c

I'll check HD heat momentarily, but there are 2 80mm fans blowing across it.

Memtest has run 6 passes with zero errors - so i'm pretty certain that it's not a RAM issue.

I had an Antec 480 True that was causing me the same kind of problems, now this is just a suggestion.

Firstly i really doubt it is the PSU because i believe antec make awesome PSU, i could be a simple overheating issue. Try leaving the side panel open and see how it goes. Could be a very good chance of the Hard drive because i heard dat western digital make some faulty HD so yeah.

Ok, I have to correct you on one thing, WD are not faulty in any way. I have build hundreds of systems using WD and only 2 bad hard drives out of all of those. I don't think it matters what brand you choose anyone could get a lemon at anytime but choosing a great brand like WD ups your odds of having a good PC experence.
I have noticed you run a seagate, did you know they have more problems then WD's HD's? I'm not saying your going to have problems I'm just telling you from experence.
Maxtor is another brand gone bad. I never started having problems with this company until the 40G 7200Rpm drives.

Maxtor, seagate, IBM, and even westren digital all make at least one good model HD and at least one bad one.

Just for shits and giggle look at people ratings on HD's
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Prod...&SubCategory=14&Order=rating&CompareItemList=
Just some food for thought.

Kind of an update:
only drive i have plugged in now is one of the SATA Seagate 160GB drives, which I installed Win2K on.

Right now it's running fine.

If it freezes up sometime during the night, i'm going to say that the WD Raptor's not the problem.

I'll also do a win2k install and another winXP install on the WD Raptor sometime tomorrow probably.

Any other thoughts?
