I have a weird problem and was hoping to get some troubleshooting advice... I have an I7-920 on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3RR motherboard.It has 3 x 2 gig sticks of memory and some drives, etc...

Recently the computer has gone through a freezing cycle, where all 4 cpu cores hit 100% utilization based on watching the CPU gadget and monitoring the task manager. I can't figure out what may be causing this issue as it is intermittent. Any ideas on a direction I can take to find out the cause of this issue? I'm leaning towards a hardware issue versus a software issue.
 
Well have you looked at what process is eating up the cpu when it hangs? Also have you ran a thorough scan to make sure you don't have any malware, this type of behavior seems common in infected pc's. Have you run a stability test like prime95 or orthos? I would also recommend testing the ram, you can do that with an ubuntu live cd. It'll come with memtest86 or something which you can use to test your memory. Also the drives you have? how many do you have and what type? Like your OS drive, how full is it? that could also be affecting you. Have you tried loading your OS on another drive? maybe the drive is going bad and that's causing the freeze ups or it's just the os that's messed up from a bad update or something. Well hope my recommendations help.
 
The only process eating any time at all is Firefox, but I closed Firefox and the issue still occurs. As for malware, I'm pretty anal about virus scans, use SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, CCCleaner and Spybot weekly and have AVG Pro installed, so I think the machine is clean.

I'll run some memory tests and make sure that is not an issue... as for drives, I have one sata Seagate (boot drive, maybe 60% full with a 120 gig partition) with plenty of room, and a sata WD drive for data. Thanks for the tips, I'll try a memory test first.
 
Also check the health of each drive, you never know your OS drive might be going bad and that could be the cause. Also a fresh install wouldn't hurt that way you get rid of any bad drivers or something that could be corrupt.
