freezes before winxp install

Cliffnotes: Trying to configure hardware in dos before it installs windows, it sits there frozen or monitor shuts off. "Setup is inspecting your computers hardware..."

Specs:

LanpartyUT NF3 250gb
A64 3000+
1g Corsair Value Select pc3200
BFG 6800 OC
WD 250gig 7200rpm IDE
Thermaltake Purepower Silent 420Watt

Problem:
Cant get windows to install. I have a win98 boot disk load it up. Got my HD fdisked and formatted. Insert the win98 cd. Says its going to configure hardware...After that the computer either sits there on that screen or the monitor shuts off and nothing happens. Anyone?
 
could it be my Powersupply? I know that the 6800 takes alot of power. I heard these thermaltake silent purepowers suck.
 
...are you trying to install XP or Win9X.....??

Your W9X OS may or may not "play nice" with the hardware you have.......

before when I had bad RAM I had similiar problems. Check that to.
