I bought an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro for my new core 2 duo system and I se it has pre-applied thermal paste (silver in colour). Should I just use this stuff or clean it off and apply some AS5?

It might be good paste and it might not. If you put AS5 on according to directions you know you have done the best you can. Your call.

consider lapping the heatsink as well if you intend to get all you can out of your setup. A pane of glass and a sheet each of 600 and 1200 grit wet and dry sandpaper works wonders ;)

However my Core2duo overclocked like mad even with the stock intel cooler so a few degrees C isnt going to kill you. You are going to be happy no matter what :p

I've heard that the stock paste on those coolers is actually quite good. I'd leave it on for the time being, and only apply AS5 if temps become a problem.

I left mine on, it cools at idle to 35c on stock...I figured all things being equal, better to leave the paste than for me, who has not built a system in 3 years, to go through a whole tube of Arctic Silver and series of remounts trying to figure out the right thickness.

I like this fan HS, it is louder than the stock HSF on high though.

Of course now the instructions say just put a dot on the core and mount your sink.
