Hello all,

Got a question about my comp freezing up/locking up during usage of 3D programs. For example, when i play WoW, it would freeze up at random times and I would have to reboot manually. At first i thought it was just the game, but then i realize that when I run a 3D screensaver from windows overnight, it froze up my comp in the morning when i try to access it. Are there anything specifically attributing to this? I have an ATI X800 pro w/ the Cat 5.3 drivers. I have also followed some of the advice on the forum by turning off fastwrite and turning down my AGP from 8x to 4x to none. Do you guys think it's the drivers that's causing the problems? My comp is newly built and so there shouldn't be problem with dust build ups. And just for safety i put a house fan next to my comp for extra cooling since i'm waiting for my water cooling kit to arrive. My specs are as follows, any assistance will be appreciated.. been trying to fix this for a couple of months now and I'm starting to lose hope on the comp =(

First things first; have you tried running memtest86 for a half day or so? This will ensure that your memory isn't the problem. Next, run prime95 for a halfday or so - if it lasts that long, it's not you CPU. What are your temps like? Are you OCing? Have you taken everything out of the case and reseated it?
 
I do not OC, and i will try to run those tests. I actually ran the memory test from microsoft instead of memtest86. But let's assume that my CPU and memory is okay, what would be the next thing to try out?
 
If we assume that (and that is a HUGE assumption) the next thing that I'd try to do is put another videocard in the machine, and test using that.Should you not have access to another video card, try running the Ruby demos for a while, see if that freezes up as well. Also, install ATI tool, and just use it to detect artifacts. If you get any artifacts, and you're not OCing, then there is a problem with your card. If your memory and CPU check out, and you've reseated your videocard and made sure it's getting enough juice, then you have a problem with either the mobo or videocard.
 
Since you seem to know what you're talking about.. can I ask you what does "Memory Leak" mean? Many people are suggesting this is the cause for the crashing and freeze-ups, weird thing is my ram is the same ram i used before i upgraded my comp so I don't think my memory would go bad all the sudden. Also, I've noticed the freezing only happens to 3D environments such as games and screensavers (never froze when i leave it on desktop) I have also changed my graphics card settings around and the relationship to crashing and my vid card is that lower the settings = fewer crashes. Something in me tells me it's my graphics card but I will go home and do the tests you suggested and try to use the ATI tool to see whether i get any artifacts (weird that ATI tool said it only detects artifacts in non-ATI cards, but I'm not at home now so i can't confirm that). Anyway thanks for your help.
 
A memory leak is a problem in the program you are running. This could be what is causing the freezing with WOW but a 3d screen saver I doubt it.

Try downloading 3DMark 01, 03 or 05 and run it in a loop. I think with the free versions you can still do this. Leave this running over night or so and see if any freezing occurs. If it does then there is a problem somewhere.

I agree with the previous poster in saying that you should try running memtest86 for a few hours atleast. Microsofts memory test I doublt is as good as memtest. It could also be a heat related issue, but give the previous stuff a try first.
