Freeware to replace Windows Live Movie Maker?

I still don't understand Microsoft's decision to kill Movie Maker in Windows 10. It was a nice simple video editor for those who don't do it professionally and don't have time to learn the ins and outs of more complicated software. I'd really like to have something similar for Windows 10 (much faster encoding time on my Win10 desktop than my Win7 laptop), but so far everything I'm finding is either payware or lacks the features I need, or has the features but is really cumbersome to use for a non-power user (VLC). I just want something that will let me rotate, trim the video duration, and crop the image. Is there any free software that enables this on Win10?

Do a search for `windows live essentials 2012` it still works with windows 10 including the newest fall update.
