I loved this game back when it came out. Haven't played it in a while though.

The source code was. The assets are not free.

What this means practically is that there are total conversions out there that you can legally download for free, but if you want to play the original game, you have to pay.
 
i have edited my 1st post to show gog. so really its just the normal price of 5.99 for F2 and the expansion but still not a bad deal. thanks for the heads up on gog
 
For 5.99, you have perpetual access to the media, a digitized version of the manual and some wallpapers or something.

A hell of a value and good co-op, if you can find someone trustworthy to play with. :D
 
Freespace 2 is still, IMO, the best combat space flight sim on the market.

I've got it running off cds so it might be different if this is a download but I had to do something I think I might have ran in in XP SP3 compatibility mode and/or with admin privileges but it ran fine after that.
