FreeBSD - network trouble

Hi,

I'm having some trouble with mye FreeBSD 5.4. Every now and then I seem to loose contact with the network, and I get this message: "rl0: watchdog timeout". I tried to google it, but as I am a newbie, what I found didn't make much sense :confused: I think I need a little help..

Oh, and I was wondering: if I install, say, firefox, what do I have to do to get KDE (3.4) to show it on the, uhm, internet menu?

This still doesn't make much sense to me :( But I thought I should mention that it often (but not always) accompanies a "ad4: TIMEOUT - WRITE_DMA retrying (2 retries left)", which shows up when I'm installing something (and I'm not i safe mode).
 
Oh! Thanks! I'm throwing it out as soon as I can. Does it explain the WRITE_DMA error as well?
 
WRITE_DMA errors are related to the IDE controller, so it doesn't sound related. However, you never know, it might be some form of side effect.

Funny you should say that. I replaced the Realtek card with another (Realtek, actually) network card, and it seems I don't get the WRITE_DMA errors anymore. Nor the watchdog timeout errors. We're still not friends though. I can't seem to get it working. FreeBSD I mean.
 
What, exactly, isn't working?
As I read it, you don't have the watchdog timeouts and the WRITE_DMA errors any more. Does the network connection still drop now and then?
 
Hm, I was a little too optimistic - the WRITE_DMA errors do show up from time to time, but not nearly as much.

It happens quite often now that kde just, well, almost freezes. There aren't any error messages, at least I can't see them. I've tried looking through the logs, but I don't know which one I'm supposed to read. Anyway, I can't find a single error message in any of them. Oh! and it happens when I'm downloading (or installing I think) something. Not always.
