What would you recommend as a free Wiki server? I'm looking for something very user generated (hence wiki). So I can install, set up the base and allow the admins to take care of it while I, the techie, only worry about uptime and connections.

I have looked at:
Twiki: Too busy, complicated (to create a page is insane for an end user), and plain ugly
Project Forum: Bland appearance, a little TOO simple. I click run and it's on. how to you debug something like that? also FUGLY.
Apple Wiki server: made for internal use, lacks many features such as email notifications, server admin needs to administer passwords and tweaking mane pages requires server-side work, but it is pretty and simple to navigate and use.

My next attempt is Media Wiki.
I don't care if it runs on Windows, Mac or Linux.
What's your opinion?

Media Wiki is pretty popular, although administration can be kinda lame. That's what I use though.

We use DekiWiki where I work at and while it's usually OK for users, it has dependencies that could be avoided and isn't that great to maintain (mostly updates and upgrades) . If you want something that's a cinch to maintain, I suggest looking elsewhere.

I tried a few Wikis and ScrewTurn Wiki seems to be quite nice. I have try it out more extensively to be able to tell you more, though.

If the look of a wiki is your main issue, have you tried looking for extra themes for it?
If you have someone with decent HTML and CSS skills, you can almost certainly change it to whatever you need it to look like.

There are a few more Wikis here:

That website is pretty helpful if you just need a list.

Have you considered an ordinary CMS instead of a Wiki?
You haven't been very specific on your requirements, so it's difficult to even guess what you really want to find.

Slapo that opensourcecms is fantastic. It was able to point me in the right direction and it really was a groupware solution I was searching for. I think OpenGoo is exactly what I need.

Thanks for all of your help.
