Free video capture software?

I'm borrowing my girlfriend's Canon ZR100 (DV camera) for fun. It came with Pinnacle Studio but she has it back at school where she lives. I've Googled for free video capture software but nothing pans out. Windows Movie Maker comes up with an error as soon as it rewinds the tape and tries to start recording.

Anyone know of a decent, free video capture app?
 
Assuming you are using firewire to upload, your error with Windows Movie Maker may just be that you don't have a compatible codec installed.

The software I use for capturing is VirtualDub. It has tons of control over quality and stuff. You will still need to have the appropriate codecs, depending on how you use it.

Seconded for VirtualDub. I've been using it for nearly a decade now, it's never let me down, and tends to do things that even Premiere and other high end video editing suites simply can't touch

And it's free.

And it's less than 1.5MB in size.

And did I say it was free? :D

This application, and some very rare others like it (EAC comes to mind) are perfect examples of near perfect coding and the absence of bloat. They tend to do more and have more ability that software hundreds if not thousands of times larger. Amazing stuff...

I've used windv quite a few times. It has the bonus of being able to save a separate file for each break in timecode. That way you don't have 1 huge file that you have to cut into clips.

Not sure if your trying to accomplish capture to file, transcoding, streaming, etc but here is another pretty good application VLC which runs on multiple platforms.
