Free Technet Subscriptions

While I do agree that once it hit SlickDeals and some other "deals" sites that this thing just blew up out of control, the sheer fact that some members here make comments like "I signed up for my bro, and now my Dad needs one too" is fairly hypocritical in my opinion. I signed up with the original link from the original posting (only because my actual Technet sub expired at the end of April and I've been looking for a decent coupon since), I grabbed the stuff I wanted/needed (basically to replace some lost ISOs from the previous purchased sub when some CDs/DVDs got scratched, and 2 keys for each), and I haven't logged back in since.

But geez, folks, it's like this thread started off and then became nothing but a constant stream of hitting the site over and over again in the attempt to get keys or ISOs - all in spite of the fact that we all knew it was starting to fall apart, and yet it continued.

Multiple signups, constant server hammering for keys... signing other people up knowing they'd never probably fulfill the requirements (the additional surveys, the feedback, etc - ok, this is an assumption, sue me), geez...

Bleh. Why do people have to ruin things so quickly? Why can't a coupon for something free be a good thing you get and should look upon as a freebie instead of the immediate reaction being "Oh man, I'm gonna print up 50 of these and have free <insert freebie here> for weeks..."

It's pretty despicable just how low we reach sometimes.

That post was almost demeaning Joe, we know you are perfect but you don't have to always go around flaunting it.

Never said I was perfect, and if you think it's demeaning, there's a psychological reason for it. If you get a freebie, great, more power to you - if you abuse it and then post like it's the second coming and you're proud of the abuse... that's when it's a problem.

i can't disagree with joe. It bothered me reading slickdealers who are pulling 20 keys of each product... just because they could.

I signed up with my own info on my own live ID and only took stuff i needed to learn for work or to update my resume, and yeah...no more than 2 keys...most of which i didn't even use that.

most [H] posters were respectful, some of the other sites sort of terrified me.

im glad you know what im doing with my keys. you make it seem like were hoarding keys to sell them. not the case. i could see your point if people were setting up multiple subs with under their own name... but my sister and bro did their subs with their own info, with their own live id's... so im not really following your frustration. i set my dad's up with his own info too, yeah im evil for helping him out.

lol, I might take you up on that, I got most of the ISO I needed, but I still wanted to get XP w/SP3.

*EDIT* I got a feeling that alot of people in the for sale section are going to be making sure the PC they are buying come with stickers. Use the keys you got responsible, besides that I really don't care.

I agree 100% with both of your posts.

Not saying people shouldn't take advantage of this, but I really don't understand why/don't sympathize with people that really have no business getting a TechNet subscription but still get one by defrauding and abusing the system, effectively hurting everybody else, but specially those that do benefit from/are the original target audience of this type of promotional deals.

I agree with Joe as well. Someone offers something for free every once in a long while and people get interested. Then human nature kicks in and people start hoarding what they can get, trying to keep it a secret while telling a small circle of friends whom tell their friends whom tell their friends. Then it breaks into chaos.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!

in the nature of technet itself, i do understand this is supposed to be for evaluation. my family wont have much to do with that, i know... but neither do most people even ones that actually pay for technet either (just because you pay for technet its not supposed to be like 'hey! 10 copies of everything!.. but thats how it comes across to everyone)

Yeah my free subscription is gone. No email to my live account stating this, or, why. I took what I needed & wanted and got 3 keys for the stuff I pulled. I'll be set:)

This sucks. I did the survey, but used my actual LiveID and US address and my subscription is gone.

This is just stupid.

I dont think i overdid it. I have 3 coomps. i grabbed 3 keys for vista and 3 for office :)

I seem to still have access , if anyone needs anything let me know. They already yelled at me because I dont live in the UK lol.

^further evidence that UK addresses were the ones that stuck. whats weird though is i did enter US at first, but still at the end, when you entered your billing info, it forced you to be UK as your country. i just played along, because i didnt care if i got physical media anyway.

i wonder if you never got to the part where you entered your billing info...

The only thing that I really wanted in the end was Office 2010 and Windows 7. I only grabbed two Office 2007 keys and that was all.

This is precisely what I mean in terms of abuse. See?

This isn't Ars, or Neowin, or some other lame ass forum. Be [H]ard, not tupid.

Then man up and open your own wallet. :D

*opens up wallet to find all the cash gone* :p

I thought he was just average. ;) (Sorry - couldn't resist - LOL) Anyway, have to agree with him a bit. I was looking for a good copy of Server 2008 so I could play with the Exchange 2010 beta and Hyper-V. Hadn't even intended to try to rip MS off with 20 Vista keys or anything.

Hey guys... my subscription still works...

Oh, my bad, I actually paid for it ;)

Weird. Mine still works and I can still request keys. I didn't rape the system too hard, just got enough keys for my personal computers, as well as some to learn alternate OSs with. I got 3x Vista Ultimate, 3x XP Pro, Office 2003 and 2007, XP MCE for my HTPC, Server 2003 and 2008.

Were there really people pulling 20x Vista keys? That really seems ridiculous.

You can only pull 10 keys for a given product, so if someone said 20x Vista keys, they probably meant 10 each for various versions as they all use different ones. But then again, some scumbuckets out there delight in multiple signups, I'm sure, and most definitely created multiple accounts with fictitious info and leeched the key servers bare of everything they could (and seemingly are continuing with the process).

Bleh... humans...

Still, I'm not sure why my account hasn't been shut down yet. For some reason though, Vista Business has been disabled for downloading and getting new serials.

probably. when this whole thing started i wised at that time that the discussion could have been limited to genmay. that way, only the real members could pursue some free gifts.

Still, I'm not sure why my account hasn't been shut down yet. For some reason though, Vista Business has been disabled for downloading and getting new serials.

when did you sign up?

well activation worked, from a key used after the sub went down. vista ultimate sp2.

it either means everyone who copied their keys before their subs went down are in great luck, or ms just has not disabled the keys themselves yet. its looking good though.

I doubt they will disable them.

I grabbed 2 Vista keys and WHS. I probably won't use the Vista installs as they are just back-ups until W7 goes RTM. I'm really happy about WHS though, I planned to use the 120 day trial, but now if everything works and I like it, I won't have to re-install..... and pay $100.

Damn I come back after a few hours and it hit the fan!

I'm glad i got my apps and keys when I did. And I only got a few... WHS and Vizio.

you know hot deals are on internet time. this deal has been dead now for relatively days....

and neither work? that sucks. it seems like the uk order form with the survey was golden if you did it.
No, my account still works. I just said that I used my US address in the UK form, but then I got the email everyone else did saying I wasn't eligible.

Mine still works as of now. But I'm already done with downloading what I needed...at least until Windows 7 comes out.

6.22 working peachy without activation...regretting not having downloaded Windows 3.11 (have floppies and key still).

Are you serious? Just for memory's sake or what?

I find it funny you can get OS's old and new, but no win98/ME. Do they think they suck so bad no-one would need or want them?:D There are still some legacy apps on 98 rigs out there because someone is too scared to upgrade - or just can't.

I was complaining to a friend about no Win95-2k, I was actually really looking forward to that.

Same; while I don't need 95-2000, NT 3.51 or 4, It'd be nice to set up a VM to play around with them. Never had a chance to mess with 3.51.

Luckily I got 98 and 2000 (all versions) from the MSDNAA access I had a few years back.

Damnit, how did I miss this deal. My sub is up today (or maybe it died yesterday). I've been hoping for a deal to get it for under 200 bucks....free would have been awesome. For now, I guess I'll have to keep an eye out and hope something good happens before 6/30.....that's really my drop dead date....15 mos for 250...not great, but I'm still thinking about it.
