Hey guys, So my GF plays WoW on her mac. She got hacked tonight and thinks that maybe she has a keylogger. She is running OS 10.4.11, any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Check your activity monitor for anything suspicious, particularly logKext or keyloggerX (only keyloggers i know of on os x)

if it's there... well then your gonna have to do some terminal work (check in /System/Library/Extensions and all the usual places)

Also, get her an authenticator, if she doesn't have one already. It's $6 for the keyfob, and the iphone/android app is free, there's no reason not to have it.

3rd, upgrade to a newer version of OS X

The more likely explanation is that she was running a 3rd party WOW mod/UI/addon that contained a keylogger.. that is how most WOW accounts get hacked. I work in IT security and have industrial strength security on my networks and I got caught the same way.. there is little to no control over the 3rd party mods for WOW.

She should start by deleting all the custom/3rd party mods in the WOW UI directories and uninstalling the Curse client if it is indeed installed. I'm sure she should be OK if she sticks to the larger and more popular mods such as Dominos, Titan Bar, Auctioneer etc but she should steer clear of the smaller lesser used mods.

ClamXAV, also upgrade.

ClamXAV scans for Windows viruses. It's meant for mixed OS environments, like an office that allows Windows and OS X use on the same network. It doesn't scan for OS X viruses because there aren't any, thus it wouldn't help in this situation.

1000's explanation is the most likely.

Macs users can choose between ClamAV and iAntivirus.

I haven't read about any virii, but a couple trojans exist.
Read about the security threats and adjust accordingly...my money would be to follow 1000's advice but iAntivirus has a slick UI that should grant peace of mind to the uneasy :)

My bet would be she clicked a supposed legit wow webpage link and put in account info and got hacked. Keyloggers really only come from very very iffy stuff for wow.

There’s no reason to be uneasy in the first place.
