I'm looking into setting up a firewall at home. Out of IPcop, pfsense, m0n0wall and SmoothWall which is better/more secure/more user friendly? Any input is appreciated :)

I think all of them do pretty much the same things. I have mainly played with IPCop. THought I have heard m0n0wall is easier to setup VPNs with. IPCop seems to be a pretty decent overall firewall, you can do some fine tuning with the rule sets.

For example, I have remote desktop to my home server setup, but it can only be accessed from my work IP. If I need to access the box remotely when I am not at work, I have created a different rule for that. I also am using Hamachi to create machine to machine VPNs.

I would say IPCOP is the most user friendly followed by smoothwall and m0n0wall, pfsense at a close second. As far as which is better depends on what you need the box to do. I would say security is high on all these versions of linux/bsd firewalls.

Try them each out and pick which one you like the best.
