Free "exchange server"-like software?

I'm looking for a piece of centralized email/sync software like exchange server. Currently, I host my own email and use hmailserver. It's excellent for email, however, I'm trying to figure out an approach to sharing calendars with my family. My server is Win 2008, so a Windows solution is obviously preferred.

We currently use Windows Live mail and a webmail client, but I have Outlook if needed. Is there any software out there that can satisfy this? Syncing calendar information is most important. Thanks.

Would Google Apps work for you?

+1. Use this for all clients (including myself) where an Exchange Server is out of budget or just not needed.

Yeah Google Apps, then download the Google Apps Sync that syncs Google Calendar with the Outlook Calendar.
