Free DVD to DIVIX or AVI software

I'm looking for free DVD to DIVIX or AVI software. I want to rip DVDs to my laptop to occupy my kids on a three hour flight. I'm not really concerened with quality, more so with size. My HDD is only 20GB. Anybody have any suggestions. The key word in this post is free.
