free DVD player?

MPC Home Cinema should be able to play DVDs right out of the box though, correct?

If additional functionality is needed and if user is a noob, then VLC. Else, MPC-HC :)

MPC uses your system's native codecs for stuff, whereas VLC includes its own codecs based on MPlayer. If you don't mind installing codecs and want a great, friendly UI, go for MPC. If you don't wanna muck around with codecs and are fine with a decent UI, go with VLC. I use VLC myself.

Uhmmm... MPC-HC has a native MPEG2/MPEG4 decoder in it, and can handle most everything. It's one file, whereas VLC is a bunch... really there's just no contest... it's MPC-HC all the way and twice on Sundays.

With MPC-HC and Windows 7, hardly anything else is needed to play almost anything (save for shit Real Media, of course).
