free desktop hardening tool?

on windows xp/vista i used ms steadystate. with an option for a paid software i used deepfreeze.

right now i dont have an option for a paid software and the workstations running win7.

do you know some opensource/free software that can help me?

SteadyState was actually discontinued after XP, so any Vista/7 support is YMMV at best. DeepFreeze was the best option I found when I was evaluating various products like this, especially with coupled with Faronic's Data Igloo product . I couldn't find any worthwhile alternatives that matched our company's requirements, so I'm watching this thread for any other product suggestions.

Similar post here that has some other products mentioned, although they all seem to be paid products and some have additional maintenance costs as well.

There is a very limited free commercialware called Comodo Time Machine. Unfortunately, there's no way to exempt specific files or registry keys.
