Looking for something to set up a forum... not really familiar with forum software so I dont know which of the options out there are any good.

You will probably want to use phpBB. An alternative would be SMF. That is assuming you can use PHP on your server and that it has a supported database such as MySQL available.

Overall, you will find phpBB to be the most used free solution, and vBulletin (what [H] uses) to be the most used commercial solution.
 
I love phpBB. I've used it a few times, I find it very easy to use, and it's quite customizable. I'd go with that.
