Free CAD program?

I have been trying to track down a free / opensource CAD program, but luck has not been riding with me. I have used Mechanical Desktop before in some U classes, but the cost is into the 4 digit range . . . and I'd prefere to stay legal.
Any recommendations welcome!

Edit: This is to be used to design a case with optimal internal arrangments of components for a custom / hybrid design.
 
Its not exactly a CAD program, but why not try Maya PLE? I've used it to for getting an idea
of how stuff is gonna fit in side. Now I have to figure out how to export my case mod to UT2K4
as a new character lol :D
 
Maybe try Sketchup? They give out free licenses to teachers which can be passed on to students, so you might be able to get the full version for free, so demo it for the 8 hours you can get off their site and see if you like it.

For a long time Autodesk provided a demo of Inventor, look around on the website. You have to order the CDs but they will ship them to you for free.
