free alternative to ms excel?

client needs this ASAP, needs to be able to read .xls and edit of course, in a fashion that is user friendly and similar to excel! URGENT would be much appreciated since he is here right now.
 
Indeed Open Office is your best bet, but if you want to check out something web based then I'd take a look at Google Spreadsheets...Open Office is the better bet I'd say though.
 
There's also the Win32 port of Gnumeric. It's "portable" in that it can be taken on a USB flash drive. And, it is much smaller in size and loads a bit faster (IMHO) than Oo_O Calc.
