I currently have:

E6750 @ 3.2Ghz
4GB DDR2
8800GTS 320 (I realize this is kind of low vram for my screen size, getting a GTX 260 soon hopefully)
500GB HDD (bout to be a 1TB drive just for video recordings and stuff)
1920x1200 resolution

I mostly want to record HD wow videos, but my fps takes a pretty big hit when I try to record while I play. Would getting a quad core help? The only thing is I'm using a scythe ninja passively atm, and I don't want to put a fan on it, and I don't know if that will work well with a C2Q. My case is TT Tsunami (hopefully P182 soon!).

Will getting a quad core processor make recording 1920x1200 wow videos smoother?
 
The FPS is going to drop either way you look at it. In FRAPS' settings make sure to set it to 30fps and not 60fps. Getting the quad might boost your fps in the game, but like i said as soon as you start recording, the fps is going to drop, with the quad it may not drop as low.
 
I know it's going to drop, but I have it set to record at 30fps. I want it to be at a steady 30, instead of a random 15-25 and never even getting up to 30, and with random graphic lag spikes where it freezes for a split second or two.

I want to know if it'll run at completely smooth 30fps while I'm recording if I get a quad? And if not, what other upgrades would I need to make?
 
its hard to say, i'd say get the quad first ...... its the best way to go since more and more games are supporting multi cores ..... then if you still have the same problem video card next, you mentioned you will eventually be getting a 260 which should be fine. and yes the res is really making your card work lol
 
well FRAPs requires a dual CPU tolet it encode to its format at full resolution. Means its fully capable of using an entire core, and probably 2.

If the game is dual threaded at all, you are choking it while recording.

Getting a quad is definently going to help. 2 cores for the game, 2 cores for FRAPs.

Do it. The stock cooler is pretty quiet, but Im pretty sure you arent going to get away with passive on a quad. So grab something like a yate-loon 120 or something else incredibly quiet, the goal is ANY airflow, not a ton ofirflow.

I think a 4870 or a GTX260 would be a big jump on the GPU, but while recording you are choking on the CPU, not the GPU.
