The French Government is taking on Twitter, specifically the use of the word ‘hashtag’ and replacing it with the French term “mot-dièse”, which means ‘sharp word’. We’re quite sure that there will be several ‘sharp words’ exchanged over the substitute wording. Freedom Fries anyone?
The commission's attempt to scrub a popular English word from the French language is hardly unusual. France has long taken a very aggressive approach to policing the French language and protecting it from unwanted foreign words.
