I don't know if this question relates to this area of the forum, but how do I check the frames per second of my games, for example, Half Life 2 and Doom 3. Is there an application I have to run outside of the game, or is the something I have to type in the console screen?

Doom3:

change shortcut to look like: Doom3.exe +set com_allowconsole 1

Then in the game use the ~ to bring down the console.

com_drawfps 1
to show FPS

Half Life2:
“Enabled Developer Console.” in menu (under keyboard - advanced or something like that)

Then in the game use the ~ to bring down the console.

cl_showfps 1
to show fps

You can also run the time demos supplied with the games.

In Doom 3, pull down the console and type 'timedemo demo1 usecache." (without the quotes)
In HL2, run Counter-Strike:Source, set the graphics settings to what you want to test at, and run the included Source Video Stress Test.

net_graph 3 is an easier to see display of FPS, among other things

FRAPS is so much better to use. No special entries to see my FPS and I can save all my screenshots in ONE folder and ONE file type. Doesnt get any easier than that.
