I have always pushed for the most FPS in any game but I see a lot of ppl using frame rate limiters.. any upside to this?
 
I think it's more of a vsync thing maybe. Or maybe they are running 60hz screens, could be many reasons.
 
It's to help keep framerate more consistent and cut down on large framerate fluctuations that can be jarring even if it doesn't drop below 30 fps.
 
yep, if you are hitting say 120fps and all of a sudden spike to 40 back to 120, those variations are definately noticeable(human can generally notice up to about 72fps, but a large difference in raw frames +/- the smoothness is always apprent)

This can go hand in hand with vsync to cap frames to say 75 max when sync allows only 60 through to minotrs refresh rate(more beneficial in CRT though, its mostly to stop tearing and such from card outpacing monitor) keep things baby bottom smooth, and its a bit easier on the card/cpu to process the info, as it would not be redlining constantly if that makes sence, though I have a buddy who has a 680 and he doesnt use it anymore, he felt a the time it was not what it was cracked up to be, the boost on the other hand is awesome.
 
A framerate limiter will clear up inconsistent frame times. For crossfire users it will clear up microstutter. If you have a 60hz display I don't see any reason to not cap the framerate. I like a 59fps cap.
 
XD both Nvidia and AMD get stutter, it is more pronounced in certain generation of cards, for the 7k series its the frame times difference even though the fps is high, its not consistent as you have said, so it does not appear as smooth as it should given the frame rates(some games and drivers make this a very pronounced issue for both camps)

It is a very interesting issue, sometimes its cause the card does not have enough bandwidth that the core needs so there is lots of high and low #s in fram rates, other times, there is ample power but there is a bottleneck of sorts via the pci-e bus, the card to card communications, or even the cpu/subsystem is simply not getting what the card wants it to when it needs it, can even be the monitor as even though say monitor can do 60Hz but can only take in X information at once you will always have some lag associated with it.

Frame rate limiter, adaptive V-Sync(Nvidia) Dynamic V-sync(Radeon Pro for Radeons noteably 7k and 4k generations) all try to help this issue that has been present a very long time for both sides of the camp, run full out or with multi-card you can have stutter, inconsistent frame rates/time between frames, tearing and the like, even single card single gpu can have this issue, though it is by far more prevalent with dual gpu especially with dual on 2 different cards.
 
I use an FPS limiter (MSI afterburner) because as stated above, a constant frame rate is much better than a fluctuating frame rate. Not only that, capping your frame rate allows you to pump up the eye candy because you're not letting your GPU work harder than it has to. In turn turn freeing up alot of horse power.

For example I use it in BF3 and cap it to 30 FPS. (Yea I know. but I'm used to 30 fps and have no issue with it.) If I wanted to maintain a smooth 60 FPS@1080p I'd have to play with a mix of medium and high settings with no filters and no MSAA. With my FPS capped at 30 I can play at All high settings with 2xMSAA and the FPS doesn't budge one bit. Stays at a constant 30. Creates a nice smooth playing experience. You should try it!!

I put it on 60fps and I felt the mouse sensitivity change by a large amount and then did some digging to find out about mouse input lag.. read about triple buffer to help with this but not sure how to enable. Seems like most of the gamers who compete leave it vsync off.
 
I use one and keep it at 120, the refresh rate. Having it stay eliminates tearing and stuttering, plus it gives the GPUs a break when they would otherwise be chugging out 200+

If you set the cap to 59 it helps with input lag for some reason. Triple buffering can also help. You can enable that with Nvidia inspector or D3DOverrider.
 
triple buffer is an OpenGL based thing, not DX, this is why AMD in overdrive have it under that setting and not a global, DX does it differently then GL does, always have.
 
You can still use triple buffering in D3D. There are a few games that support it natively and a few different ways to force it on. With AMD you can use RadeonPro and with Nvidia you can use Nvidia inspector. There is always the tried and true D3DOverrider in rivatuner.
 
Another advantage (apart from controlling the stutter issue) with limiting frames is also to use less power/put out less heat since the gpu isn't working as hard. It makes sense to do this with high end cards only though as you probably need every bit of muscle from a low end card.
 
yeah I put my limit at a max of 120 fps so my card does not go crazy in some menus that have no limit and can push card harder than an actual game. I normally use vsync in most games though.
 
I limit mine so my vid card won't always be running full stress. No need to hear fan ramp up.
 
Yeah I like to limit as well, usually 40-59fps depending on the game, as others said, nice and stable visually, and can help keep uneeded heat down. I havent been a frame rate pusher in a long while, so the big number flying by in the upper left of the screen means less to me than it once did too haha.
 
I do not think it matters much from a power usage standpoint but might help temps, after all i card is running full clocks it uses X power but if its less % used the temps defiantely would be better. I think power wise difference is very small..You could always declock the card to achieve both sides ie less frames and defiantely less power while still having a nice fat bus and shader count :) and in the case of new cards they would be able to boost clock to normal speeds or so,memory though low voltage uses a surprising amount of power and pushes a fair amount of heat as well
