FPS Problems

Specs: Intel Pentium4 3GHZ
1 GIG OF RAM
420 WATT (12V+ = 13amps)
ATI 9800 PRO
New 80GB HD

Drivers updated, No spyware and/or viruses, BIOS updated already, and nothing is overheating.

When I'm playing any kind of game, I get massive fps drops. As in for games like Counter-Strike when I put my max fps at 101(thats how many it can get) I only get 20-40 fps when I see anything, but when I don't see anything I get perfect FPS. (As in nothing but the wall with no action or people on my screen or near it)

This happens to a lot of games. Recently I checked that my 420 watt came with the case so my power supply is cheap. So I checked the 12V+ and it showed only 13 amps and I was wondering if that was the problem. I just ordered a Fortron and it has 2 12+V 15AMPS and I hope that will fix the problem and I ordered it off of newegg and I am just wondering if It is the power supply or not(I need one anyways(the powersupply)) or it could be another problem.

What are your in game settings? Sounds to me like if its CSS then 20-40 fps is about right for a 9800 pro depending on your settings.

ive got a 9800pro i get better than 20-30fps in CS:S... at 1024x768... maybe even 1280x1024... i get in the 60+

Wow, CS 1.6... Integrated Graphics should get great frames...

Did you install all your drivers?

Check to see what programs you are running in the background. Make sure that all drivers (video card, chipset) are installed properly. Has this happened in the past? If it hasn't, maybe the updated video card driver is to blame. I don't think the PSU is a culprit, but 13amps is pretty bad on the 12v rail. A new PSU will solve any stability issues you have.

New train of thought: if the video driver detects a lack of power (like the nVidia drivers do), then it will pull the card into 'Safe mode' and reduce the clocks to slow 2D speeds. Does anyone know if the ATi drivers do this? If they do, it may be worth checking your log files: right click on My Computer -> Manage, check out the Applications logs and see if the driver is reporting any errors. I can't remember what heading they are under (the computer I'm at has account restricions all over the place) but its the first sub-heading in the left pane. Check your system logs while you are at it, see if anything is going awry there.

I'm not at home right now, but the drivers are updated. I tried hundreds of drivers and they all do the same thing. I've ordered the PSU and it should be here by Sunday or so. Hopefully that is the problem.

I will check the log files when I get home.

15A still isn't too great. I checked my power supply the other day and I think I have 33A on it. To me it looks like the card or the power like you said.

Could still be a faulty power supply.

Like I said, go to the icon for My Computer -> ricght click on it -> click on Manage -> Click on Event Viewer in the left hand pane -> click on Applications.
scroll down to see if the ATi driver is reporting errors. Also check out the System logs as well, see if there is anything there.

ok i got this error for eventsystem "The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internetal processing. HRESULT was 800706BA from line 44 of d:/nt/com/com1x/src/events/tier1/eventsystemobj.cpp Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report Error.

and "Unable to open the Server service. Server performanace data will not be returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0.

and "The open procedure for services 'WmiApRpl" in DLL "C:\Windows\system32\wbem\wmiaprpl.dll" has taken longer than the established wait time to complete. There may be a problem with the extensible counter or the service it is collecting date from or the system may have been very busy when this call was attempted."

That's about it.. Nothing about my video card.

p.s got my new power supply today and still having the problem. (2 12V+ 18.AMPS) 400 watt fortron

it is malware.

Edit: ooops, forgot to tell you to reinstall windows. Do it now.

Anyone? I dunno why this got moved into the ATI Flavor forums, but this is not a specific problem.

can you test your 9800PRO in another PC to see if it's the culprit?
if your system performance is normal other than games maybe you should check this out?

I tried 6 different video cards on my computer and they all do the same thing.

nvm on my last post.. but my ram isn't corrupted, used it on another computer, and I could run cs1.6 well.. What else could possibly be wrong?

try to isolate your problem, remove all unnecessary hardware (extra hdd, sound-card, tv-card, optical drive etc...) and do some stress testing particular to each of your components. Memtest for testing the memory, Prime95 for testing the processor and looping 3dmark for testing the graphics, heck you can even test your hdd performance...
this way you can isolate which component is faulty, if memtest fails you know you have bad memory, if prime fails cpu is most likely villain, lock ups in graphics tests should point to faulty graphics card. if you can, try and test each component in some other pc to see if they behave themselves under normal circumstances.

edit : you can't say ram isn't faulty since some chipsets/motherboards react different to memory from different vendors. is your memory listed on the list of compatible memory of the motherboard, maybe it's just incompatible.

Yea, I'm not sure if my brand ram is compatible with the motherboard. Its some wierd brand I never heard of.

Ok I just tried to HyperX Kingston 3200's and they both do the same thing with the fps.

I was checking earlier trying to do a 3DMark test and it showed me this

I was trying to run 3DMarks and it said I couldn't run it because..

"Hardware does not support billinear texture filtering"

"Hardware does not support multitexturing with at least 2 textures."

"Hardware does not support cube textures"

"Hardware does not support compressed textures (DXT1 and DXT3)

"Hardware does not support Frame Buffer Alpha"

"Hardware does not support stencil buffer"

then when I saw my specs it was wierd(my cousin jacked my pentium4 and put in a celeron 2.0, he just told me.. *** says Socket 775 and I have 478) and a lot of other things look wierd..
